Foundation reading 17 of 17 · ~4 min
Recognize neutralization products
Your goal: Connect a simple acid–hydroxide reaction with salt and water products.
A focused reading from Acid-Base Neutralization and Proton Transfer. Reading time is a Chem Help estimate.
Optional prerequisite review
- Recognize acids and bases
- Balance atoms with coefficients
- Ions and chemical formulas — foundation lesson missing
Review if useful. These suggestions never lock a step.
Products of neutralisation
Acid plus base gives salt plus water. The salt is the cation of the base combined with the anion of the acid, and its formula comes from charge balance as always.
Watch for diprotic acids such as H₂SO₄, which need two hydroxides per molecule to be fully neutralised.
H₂SO₄(aq) + 2 NaOH(aq) → Na₂SO₄(aq) + 2 H₂O(l)
