Sources and Licensing

A source citation explains where information came from. It does not, by itself, grant permission to reuse it.

Source and policy links checked: . This date applies to the documents below, not to a completed rights review of every lesson.

What has been verified

The entries below separate verified publisher statements from unresolved rights for specific ChemHelp content. A chemistry check or an internal “approved” label is not legal clearance. No site-wide open license or certification of originality is granted here.

Publisher license verified

OpenStax — Chemistry 2e

Paul Flowers, Klaus Theopold, Richard Langley, William R. Robinson; OpenStax / Rice University. Current online edition; preface and citation/attribution notice

The current web edition identifies CC BY-NC-SA 4.0: noncommercial reuse with attribution and ShareAlike for adaptations, subject to the license. OpenStax also publishes a separate notice requesting prior written permission for LLM training or ingestion into generative-AI offerings. Third-party credits and trademarks require separate attention.

ChemHelp review status: Older ChemHelp records say CC BY 4.0, but the exact source copies and contemporaneous license evidence have not been established. Those historical claims remain unverified. The current terms do not establish which license applies to an earlier copy or to any particular lesson. Version, adaptation, and AI-use questions require human review; permission or replacement may be needed.

BIPM — The International System of Units (SI)

SI Brochure, ninth edition (2019), updated in 2026

BIPM's brochure page identifies CC BY 4.0 for this document. Reuse requires attribution, a license link, and identification of changes under that license.

ChemHelp review status: This verification covers the identified brochure, not every BIPM webpage. Existing lesson links to base-unit webpages do not establish which brochure version, if any, supplied quoted or adapted wording.

Publisher policy verified

NIST — reference data and constants

NIST copyright and licensing policy; dataset-specific terms still matter

NIST distinguishes employee works, Standard Reference Data compilations, and third-party material. Its policy describes different rights for these categories; public availability is not a universal public-domain license.

ChemHelp review status: The exact dataset, release, credits, and applicable terms must be identified before copying a table or compilation. Checking a scientific value does not establish reuse rights for the surrounding material.

Reuse rights unresolved

Chemistry LibreTexts — General Chemistry

Bookshelf landing page; individual content pages not established

The bookshelf landing page does not establish a single reuse license for its linked books and pages. Individual page licenses, authors, and third-party credits must be checked.

ChemHelp review status: ChemHelp's broad bookshelf citation is not sufficient permission for a particular passage, problem, or image. Exact pages and any copied or adapted portions still need review.

Publisher policy verified

College Board — AP Chemistry resources

Official course and exam links; copyright permission policy

Official course and released-question pages are external references. College Board publishes permission requirements for reuse of its copyrighted materials; linking to a resource does not license its content.

ChemHelp review status: An AP alignment reference does not establish permission to reproduce exam questions, scoring guidelines, or figures. No blanket College Board reuse permission is claimed here. Chem Help is independent and is not endorsed by College Board.

Reuse rights unresolved

CIAAW / IUPAC — standard atomic weights

Standard Atomic Weights webpage (2024 table)

The source can be used to check the recommended values. A reuse license for reproducing its tables has not been verified for ChemHelp.

ChemHelp review status: Do not treat a factual citation or an accessible table as blanket permission to reproduce the table. The exact release, credits, and intended use need review.

Original work, adaptations, and quotations

Missing citations do not establish that a lesson is original. An internal “original” label, a paraphrase, or a reference-only link does not resolve authorship or reuse rights. Adaptations need an identified source version, applicable terms, and change notices; quotations and figures need their own attribution and rights basis. Some records still need this evidence.

AI assistance does not establish ownership or permission. The provenance audit identified possible source-derived lesson context in ChemTutor; it did not establish every historical AI input or transmission. Questions about source versions, AI-use permissions, or other unresolved rights may require permission, replacement, or human legal review.

To flag a concern, include the page URL, the passage or figure, and the source or permission evidence if available. Name and email are optional on the correction form. Reporting an issue queues it for review; it does not mean the content has already been corrected.
